Time for Reflection: At the End of the Foundation’s Year

“The secret of Christmas is that
as we seek something great and extraordinary,
our attention is drawn to that which is small and inconspicuous.”

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Even if we tend to forget it in the stress of everyday life and in the pre-Christmas frenzy, Advent is traditionally a time of reflection. It invites us to pause and reflect – on what has been and what may yet come. In view of the current crises, the latter is more difficult than ever, and what really counts in the here and now is becoming all the more important: connecting with our fellow citizens and those who share in our lives and our fortunes. This is especially true for an organisation like SAGST, whose healing initiatives only become visible via the projects and partners it funds and the institutions it has befriended, as well as by working with service providers and other support recipients.

In this spirit, we would like to express our sincere thanks for the encounters – both large and small – we have shared in 2022 and wish you all the best for the holidays and the New Year.

The cold season – when our Foundation magazine is usually published – is the season for root vegetables, which are high in nutrients thanks to all the energy and vigour of summer and autumn that are concentrated in them. The same is true for this issue.

SAGST is taking a short Christmas break from 24 to 31 December and wishes its foundation contacts, funding partners and service providers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We would also like for our Christmas greeting to arouse anticipation for the Foundation’s upcoming publication on the topic of nutrition, which will be published in February 2022.

The coronavirus pandemic, which led to major losses, caused stock indices to plummet by more than 30 percent. Its financial consequences also infected many foundations, which had already been significantly weakened by a long phase of falling interest rates before Covid-19. How the SAGST experienced this challenging year and the investment strategy that was pursued during the crisis is explained by Markus Ziener on the occasion of the publication of SAGST’s funding and financial report.

Attentive readers may have already noticed that there is also basic information (only in German) about the Software AG Foundation (SAGST) in what is known as ‘plain language’ available on our website. In doing so, we want to present key aspects of our work as simply as possible.
